MIAMI ... sprawled along a winding bluff ridge overlooking the wide Missouri River valley, was platted as Greenville in 1838 and five years later received its present name. By 1840, a river port of considerable importance, shipping large quantities of hemp and other produce. The white frame Christian Church (open by permission) on the main street of the town, was built in 1854 and is typical of the less pretentious Missouri "meeting houses" of the period.
